A Cult Classic

2006 Futo Oakville, Napa

For all our fans out there that have harassed us for the last six weeks, this one’s for you. We do appreciate the encouragement! Several of you were able to taste this little gem with us about two weeks ago at Wine Styles on Louetta Rd in North Houston.

This wine is a rockstar, with only 374 cases produced, it brings the whole band with it.

    Thumbs up or thumbs down

We are having a conversation about starting to blog wine again. We want to do it, if people will comment. So, we are going to add a little feature to the bottom of each post – “thumbs up or thumbs down”.
Should we do that or do “spit or swallow” – as [...]

2003 Laird Family Diamond Mountain Ranch “Cabernet”

Paul and I enjoyed a bottle of the 2003 Laird Family Cabernet from Diamond Mountain Ranch last night as we talked about business and the historical day, yesterday in America. This was the last release from Laird of this wine as the contract for the grapes ran out. I am finding along with Paul, that [...]

2003 Rubicon Estate Rutherford “Rubicon”

Posted on January 17, 2009 by jheck

Paul and I enjoyed this wine with our wives and a few good friends last night at Brix wine bar in Houston, located in the new Vintage Park complex at Louetta Rd and FM 249 in Houston, TX. We had several of the wines from Rubicon last night including the Merlot, and Cask, but this was the star. Although 2003 was not an overall good vintage for California this wine is impressive and is much better than the reviews it received upon it’s release with the notoriously low scoring (IMO) ST giving it a 91.

2005 Darioush “Pinot Noir”

Posted on December 31, 2008 by jheck

Diana and I really enjoyed this Pinot with friends at Brix wine bar in Houston, TX the other day. This was my first occasion to have the Pinot from Darioush, but have been a big fan of their Cabernet for quite a while. Darioush focuses on limited production red Bordeaux varietals and small lots of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Shiraz. Steve Devitt is the winemaker and vineyard manager and believes in a minimalist intervention approach to making wines that displays the finest qualities of each of the Darioush vineyards unique soils and micro-climates.

2003 Vineyard 29 “Aida” Cabernet Sauvignon

Posted on December 18, 2008 by jheck

Paul and I enjoyed the Aida recently with our better half’s at a new wine establishment in Houston TX called Brix. The owners are very friendly and are not just entrepreneurs, but are passionate and knowledgeable about their wine. Brix offers a warm and cozy ambiance with a very traditional wine cellar feel to it. Enjoy this wine slowly as it will unfold and change as you drink it.

2002 Jim Barry “The Benbournie” Cabernet Sauvignon

Posted on December 16, 2008 by jheck

Paul and I enjoyed this excellent inaugural release Cabernet from Down Under, Saturday at Ibiza restaurant in mid-town Houston. As I have mentioned before the wine list is special there and the pricing is very fair, and no Paul and I don’t get anything in return for all the free pub. The Benbournie region just north-west of Claire was settled in 1853 by German Catholic friends of a local priest. The original settlement was comprised of about 15 mud huts surrounding Father kranewitter’s Roman Catholic chapel.

2005 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet

Posted on December 15, 2008 by pcook

Well, this tasting is a little old, but was very nice and unique, in that we all took notes on the wine (actually Carol wrote the notes, as we all tasted).
Obviously, this wine is a top a performer and as such, we have had it several more times since this tasting.  It is always special and most of the components are the same varying only by the mood of the drinker.  Interesting how everyone had something a little different to add to the puzzle, but some of the many puzzle pieces look and sound the same.

2006 Bergstrom – Pinot Noir “Bergstrom Vineyard”

Posted on December 12, 2008 by jheck

Last night Paul and I with the usual group of passionate Oenophiles enjoyed this lovely Pinot from Oregon in the Dundee Hill’s AVA. The vineyard is only 9 years old but is producing some really world class juice.  Bergstrom is a certified Biodynamic wine producer since 2004 and has been growing their grapes organically since the first planting in 1999. Biodynamic agriculture is a method of organic farming that treats the vineyard or farm as unified and individual organisms, emphasizing balance and interrelationship of the soil, vines, and animals as a closed system.

Ibiza restaurant in Houston – Great wine list and value

Posted on December 3, 2008 by jheck

I haven’t blogged much since I smashed my clavicle and had surgery, so I thought I would write a little something about a recent night at Ibiza restaurant in Houston TX. For anyone that lives in Houston and is a wine addict like me, you cannot beat their wine prices anywhere, and their list is very good as well. The night was a special one to honor a friend who was having a birthday, so I didn’t make a great effort to write detailed notes on the wines, as I didn’t want to be terribly rude. This blog will look a little different in format, but I hope that you enjoy the information on the wines.

2007 Black Kite “Kite’s Rest” Pinot Noir

Posted on November 25, 2008 by jheck

Paul and I recently received our 2007 shipment of Black Kite Cellars complete lineup. We tasted all four of the 2007 release that night along with a 2001 Willaims Seylem “Rochioli River Block”. Black Kite cellars is a family owned and run artisan producer of hand crafted, terrior driven Pinto Noir.

2004 Nickel & Nickel “Witz End” Cabernet

Posted on November 20, 2008 by pcook

I recently enjoyed the second vintage of Witz End Cabernet from Nickel & Nickel with Paul and it is drinking quite nicely and I have seen it evolve over the last year. We both agreed that it would improve for another year or so in the bottle. The Witz End vineyard is located on the Rutherford Bench in the southern part of Rutherford. The vineyard was planted in 2001. The soil is composed of well-drained gravelly clay loam.

2004 Falcor Sangiovese

Posted on November 6, 2008 by jheck

I just got back to H-town from my trip to LA finishing up a large network and VoIP phone upgrade. The trip was quite enjoyable as I was able to spend some quality time with an old friend that I have known since first grade, and was once my wife’s boyfriend in sixth grade. My friend and i loaded his truck with two motorcycles, a Honda XR400, and a KTM 625 and went on an excursion across California. We spent time in the Mojave desert, Joshua Tree state park, The Sierra Nevada mountain range, and the Sequoia National forest. Those that know me well, expected that I would come back with something broken, and i did not disappoint them. I managed to break my Clavicle in several places, but did not go off the side of the mountain. :-)
