1988 Salon Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Posted on 2008 09, 29 by pcook

A great ChampagneAs some of our friends know, we are making it a point to drink champagne on Sundays – usually followed by some whites and then a red or two and a dessert wine, of course… So, some of us have a growing affinity to champagne in general. When Bobby B. brought over this 1988 Salon, we all went a little goo-goo.

2005 Astrales “Tempranillo”

Posted on 2008 09, 26 by jheck

Had the opportunity to drink this very low production Astrales Tempranillo or Tinto Fino from Spain’s Ribera Del Duro region, that is the best 100% Tempranillo I have ever had, hands down.
The grapes for this wine are harvested from the oldest vineyard in the Bodega.

2005 Blankiet Cabernet “Paradise Hills”

Paul and I enjoyed this amazing cabernet by winemaker Helen Turley. Blankiet Estate was created in 1996 by Claude Blankiet and his wife, Katherine. From 46 acres on the foothills of the Mayacamas range, 16 acres of vineyard has been developed by renowned viticulturist David Abreu. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were planted on volcanic ash and fractured rock, and Merlot on the clay deposited by streams draining the mountain ridge above.

Helen Turley was hired as winemaker and responsible for the first eight vintages.

Had this Spanish Rioja style wine about two months ago with Paul from winemaker Christian Tietje, and really enjoyed it.  This is a big fruit bomb.

Last night we celebrated the return from Napa of Paul and Carol over a nice prepared meal, and much fine Napa cult wine. Paul and Carol shared some of their experiences and great pictures with us over the great Crawfish Etouffee that Diana made using my Brother-in-law Roy’s famous recipe.

My Bucket List of wine

Posted on 2008 08, 01 by jheck

I was listening to my favorite morning show on 94.5 FM the Buzz in H-town, and the morning DJ Rod Ryan was talking about a bucket list of things to drink or milestone events regarding drinking, such as making your own beer, which I already do. After listening to this I decided to create a bucket list of wines that I would like to have or have had before I kick the bucket.
