2005 Rubicon Estate “Captains Reserve” Cabernet

Posted on April 15, 2009 by jheck

It has been a while since we posted a review on a Cabernet Sauvignon, so I thought I would dig out some notes from earlier this year and share with you. The Captains Reserve Cabernet is only available at the winery or to mailing list subscribers of Rubicon. It is exceptionally well made wine with quality fruit and terrior.

Winery: Rubicon Estate

Vintage: 2005

Varietal: 100% Cabernet

Appellation: Oakville

Tasting: Dark inky color in the stem. On the nose blackberry, black cherry, black currant, creme de cassis, lavender, eucalyptus, butterscotch, toasty oak, graphite, with a nice dusty/rusty component, followed by hints of vanilla, pepper, and star anise. Nice, full and round mouth-feel with smooth integrated tannins. Supple ripe fruit with great richness and generosity. The wine really coats your palate with pleasing long lasting fruit for a couple of minutes. Will improve with cellar time, and drink well for many years to come.

Rating: 93 JH
